About

Mission

The mission of Longtermtrends is to make financial markets accessible through easy-to-use charts, empowering you to spot trends and stay informed.

Our Story & Philosophy

My name is Silvan, the founder, and my journey with Longtermtrends began in 2016. After watching YouTube videos (like this one) full of interesting charts, I wished there was a website to summarize and automatically update them. Having studied Accounting & Finance and worked with software teams, I had the resources to bring the idea to life. Initially, I envisioned Longtermtrends as my personal dashboard of charts that I wanted to monitor, and I have been expanding it ever since. Over the years, the charts on Longtermtrends have been featured in esteemed publications such as the Financial Times.

That initial journey of building my own dashboard taught me a crucial lesson. The more data I charted, the more I realized that the financial world wasn't a place for easy answers or guru predictions. It was filled with noise, hype, and oversimplified narratives that promised certainty but rarely delivered. I saw a need for something different—not another source of "hot tips," but a space grounded in intellectual honesty and a respect for complexity.

This led to the core philosophy that drives Longtermtrends today. We reject the guru model. We start by admitting what we don't know and believe most investors are better off embracing diversification—the only free lunch in investing—rather than trying to find the needle in the haystack. Shaped by my decade as a Scrum Master, Longtermtrends embodies agile principles like iterative learning and continuous feedback. We offer no easy answers, but instead provide the tools and network for a disciplined process—one grounded in curiosity, evidence-based debate, and the humility to adapt.

It's a space for collaborative thinkers to learn, challenge, and grow together.

Longtermtrends Community

In March 2025, we proudly launched the Longtermtrends Community. This vibrant space allows investing enthusiasts to connect through comment sections on chart pages and our Discord server. Members can also download chart data for personal analysis. While free membership provides basic access, premium membership unlocks exclusive Discord channels and additional features.
Join our growing community of academics, investors, finance professionals, and investing enthusiasts to share experiences, connect, learn, and grow together. Build meaningful connections and collaboratively explore financial trends.

Available Charts and Data

On Longtermtrends you can expect a wide range of charts covering economic metrics and financial markets, including stocks, precious metals, commodities, FX rates, bonds, and cryptocurrencies. We often utilize "ratios" to compare the relative performance of dollar-denominated assets, effectively eliminating inflation effects. Many pages feature information on the correlation between assets and how well they'd fit in a diversified portfolio.

Quarterly Chart Brief

Every quarter we send out a newsletter about the latest developments in the charts. You can read our past publications here and subscribe on the homepage.

Data Sources & Integrity

To accompany the charts, each page comes with an interpretation, data sources and links to further information. Our primary data sources include Federal Reserve Economic Data (St. Louis Fed), Yahoo Finance, Nasdaq Data Link, MSCI, and Stooq. You can find a comprehensive list of data sources for financial markets here.
As mentioned in the terms of use, although the information on this website were obtained from sources believed to be reliable, we can of course not guarantee its accuracy, validity, timeliness or completeness.

Audience

As the subscriber list shows, the Longtermtrends audience includes many academics, investors, and finance professionals. The site ranks highly on Google on many popular keywords, such as "stocks vs gold chart", "bitcoin vs gold chart", or "home price income", the last of which is particularly interesting for home buyers.
The overwhelming majority of users come from the United States, followed by other English speaking countries, Germany, South Korea, and India.

Support & Sponsorship

For me personally, Longtermtrends has always been a passion project that demanded enormous amounts of time and money. To this day, all revenue has been directly reinvested into the site, mostly to pay software developers. If you find the site helpful, please consider donating.
